Gray boards, pale patches, and a dry-looking surface can take away from the striking appearance of an ipe deck. These changes are easy to miss when they happen gradually. Ipe oiling restores depth to the wood’s color and helps defend it against sunlight and moisture.
Ipe is exceptionally dense, which is part of what makes it a strong outdoor material. That same density also means an ordinary surface coating is unlikely to perform well. We use Messmer’s UV Plus, a penetrating oil formulated for hardwoods. It soaks into the wood rather than forming a film on top, bringing out the grain and creating an even, natural-looking finish. The oil also includes the protective seal within the application, so sealing is not treated as a separate service.
Before we begin ipe oiling, the wood must be properly prepared. Our two-step chemical wash starts with sodium metasilicate and/or sodium hydroxide to remove dirt and buildup. We follow it with oxalic acid, which neutralizes the surface and opens the wood cells for better oil penetration. When needed, we may also sand a deck before applying the product.
