Good results begin before the stain goes on. We use a two-step chemical washing process to prepare the surface. First, sodium metasilicate and/or sodium hydroxide cleans the wood thoroughly. We then neutralize it with oxalic acid, which opens the wood cells and encourages deep, even penetration. If the deck needs sanding, we can address that during preparation. Careful prep matters with dense wood like ipe; simply brushing stain over an unprepared surface will not produce the same finish.
For ipe staining, we use Messmer’s UV Plus, an oil-based product that penetrates deeply, highlights the grain, and protects the wood from UV-related fading. The protective seal is part of the staining application rather than a separate step. Because the product penetrates deeply and will not wash away in rain, changing weather does not place the same restrictions on application as it may with other finishes.
